L.A.B.S.: Jellyfish Collector

Grade Level: Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

🎯 Learning Objectives

  • Digital Dexterity: Students will demonstrate controlled cursor positioning, timing, and clicking/dragging precision to capture moving targets in a virtual environment.

  • Hand-Eye Coordination: Students will synchronize visual tracking of moving objects (jellyfish) with physical input timing to successfully complete collection tasks.

  • Algorithmic Thinking & Prediction: Students will identify patterns in object movement, breaking down a dynamic task into a sequence of steps and predicting outcomes based on visual data.

⏱️ The Activity: The Jellyfish Drift

1. The "Catch the Bubble" Warm-up (5 Mins)

  • Teacher Intro: "Class, today we’re diving deeper into the ocean to help gather glowing jellyfish. They float and move around, so we need to practice our 'waiting eyes' and gentle clicking fingers before we make our move."

  • Physical Practice: Have students practice "air-clicks"—making a soft pinching motion with their thumb and index finger on command. Remind them: "Just like watching a real animal, we have to watch where it's going, time it right, and click softly!"

2. The Jellyfish Journey (15 Mins)

  • Phase 1 (The Slow Current): Students start by catching slow-moving or stationary jellyfish to get used to target acquisition on their specific input device (mouse vs. trackpad).

  • Phase 2 (Drifting Currents): As the jellyfish begin to drift faster and change directions, encourage students to pause, track the path visually, and anticipate where the jellyfish will float next.

  • Phase 3 (The Deep Sea Challenge): For advanced students, challenge them to clear a set number of jellyfish without missing or clicking empty water, focusing on high precision and rhythm.

3. Reflection (5 Mins)

  • Discussion: Ask the students: "Was it harder to click a jellyfish when it was floating fast or when it was moving slow? Why do you think watching first helped you catch more?"

✅ Success Criteria

  • The Minnow: Can click stationary targets easily but struggles to time clicks on moving jellyfish.

  • The Navigator: Successfully tracks and captures moving targets with moderate rhythm and minimal missed clicks.

  • The Jellyfish-Master: Consistently anticipates movement patterns, demonstrating excellent hand-eye coordination and high-level timing accuracy.

🎓 Mr. M’s Teacher Pro-Tip:

If students are getting frustrated by missing moving targets, have them rest their wrist lightly on the desk and practice "hovering" over the path instead of chasing the jellyfish all over the screen. For trackpad users, remind them to keep their finger light—heavy tapping often causes the cursor to slip off the target at the exact moment of the click!
