Lesson Plan: Flutter Letters (Butterfly Alphabet Match)

Focus: Alphabet Recognition & Letter-Sound Fluency | L.A.B.S.: Flutter Letters | Grade Level: K - 1st

🎯 Learning Objectives

  • Letter Identification: Students will quickly recognize and match upper and lowercase target letters presented visually and audibly.

  • Auditory Discrimination: Students will connect spoken letter prompts with the correct visual letter symbol on the screen.

  • Hand-Eye Coordination & Pacing: Students will practice precise mouse or trackpad control to "catch" moving targets in a fun, time-sensitive environment.

⏱️ The Activity: The Butterfly Meadow

1. The "Catch & Match" Intro (3-5 Mins)

  • Teacher Hook: Start with a quick prompt: "Flutter letters are flying through the meadow, and they need to find their homes! Listen closely to the letter helper, find the matching butterfly, and add it to your collection."

  • Demonstrate how to listen to the audio prompt ("Tap to hear!") and scan the screen for the correct target letter before clicking.

2. The Collection Phase (15 Mins)

  • Phase 1 (Target Recognition): Students listen to the requested letter audio and identify it among a flutter of moving butterfly options.

  • Phase 2 (Precision Catching): Students use mouse accuracy to click the correct butterfly, working their way up to a 0 / 10 goal completion.

  • Phase 3 (Collection & Reset): Once the target count is reached, students celebrate their completed butterfly collection and restart for fluency practice.

3. Reflection (5 Mins)

  • Ask the students: "Which letter was the hardest to find today? How did listening to the sound help you find the right butterfly faster?"

✅ Success Criteria

  • The Caterpillar: Recognizes core alphabet letters with teacher guidance, occasionally clicking nearby distractors before finding the match.

  • The Chrysalis: Comfortably matches most target letters independently, using the audio prompt when needed to verify sounds.

  • The Monarch: Swiftly and accurately identifies target letters by sight and sound, completing the 10-butterfly collection with high precision and confidence.

🎓 Mr. M’s Teacher Pro-Tips:

  • Tip #1 (Audio First): Remind early learners to click the sound icon if they forget which letter they are hunting for. Building the habit of listening before clicking reinforces phonics and letter-name mastery.

  • Tip #2 (Cursor Control): For Kindergarteners struggling with fast-moving targets, encourage patience. Remind them to wait until the butterfly floats closer rather than chasing it wildly across the screen!

📚 Standards Alignment

New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) - English Language Arts (K-1)

  • RF.K.1.D: Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

  • Application: Visually identifying and selecting the correct letter symbols to catch the matching butterflies.
