Lesson Plan: Deep Sea Angler

Focus: Mouse Control, Target Acquisition & Clicking Precision L.A.B.S.: Deep Sea Angler Grade Level: Kindergarten – 5th Grade

🎯 Learning Objectives

  • Target Acquisition: Students will demonstrate the ability to quickly and accurately move the mouse cursor to specific, moving targets on the screen.

  • Click Mastery: Students will practice controlled single clicks, learning to use the click-to-dash mechanic intentionally to speed up without overshooting their targets.

  • Visual-Spatial Coordination: Students will navigate the digital space by processing visual feedback (e.g., keeping targets within the angler fish's light radius and predicting movement paths).

⏱️ The Activity: The Midnight Zone Catch

1. The "Dry Land" Warm-up (5 Mins)

  • Teacher Intro: "Class, today we are diving deep into the ocean where it is very dark. We have to use our Angler Fish's glowing light to find things, which means our mouse needs to point exactly where we want to look. We also need to practice our clicks, because clicking makes our fish zoom faster in that direction! If we click without aiming, we might zoom right past our target!"

  • Physical Practice: Have students practice "spider fingers." Ask them to rest their hand flat on the desk (without the mouse) and practice lifting just their index finger to tap the desk gently. Remind them: "If we press too hard, our whole hand moves and we won't be pointing at our target when we zoom!"

2. The Deep Sea Dive (15 Mins)

  • Phase 1 (The Twilight Zone): Students start with the initial levels to get used to simply moving the mouse to control the light radius. The focus here is just tracking slow-moving objects without clicking to dash just yet.

  • Phase 2 (The Midnight Zone): As targets begin to move faster, students must now use their click to dash toward them and "catch" them. Encourage students to aim their cursor steadily before they click, rather than spam-clicking and losing control of their fish.

  • Phase 3 (The Deep Trench Challenge): For advanced students, challenge them to maintain high accuracy percentages. Introduce smaller, faster targets that require quick reflexes and perfectly timed dashes to catch.

3. Reflection (5 Mins)

  • Ask the students: "What happened when you clicked to move faster? Was it harder to catch the fish when you were zooming around? Why is it important to aim before we click?"

✅ Success Criteria

  • The Minnow: Can move the mouse to find targets in the dark but clicks randomly, causing the fish to zoom out of control and miss targets.

  • The Navigator: Successfully tracks moving targets and uses the click-to-dash mechanic with moderate accuracy to catch them.

  • The Deep Sea Explorer: Swiftly tracks the fastest targets, executing precise clicks to dash perfectly to the target without overshooting or losing control.

🎓 Mr. M’s Teacher Pro-Tip:

If you notice students missing their targets right as they click, they are experiencing "click drift"—pressing the left mouse button with so much force that they physically shove the mouse off-target right before the fish dashes. Have them anchor the heel of their hand or their wrist firmly on the desk or mousepad. Tell them their wrist is glued down and only their "pointer finger" is allowed to do the work. For trackpad users, remind them to keep one finger for steering and use a separate, gentle tap for their dash to avoid accidental dragging!
