Lesson Plan: Cotton Candy Spinner

Focus: Fine Motor Skills, Sustained Click-and-Drag Precision, & Rotation Timing

L.A.B.S.: Carnival Cotton Candy Spinner

Grade Level: Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

🎯 Learning Objectives

  • Digital Dexterity & Dragging: Students will demonstrate controlled, continuous click-and-drag motion to build up and spin cotton candy without losing cursor engagement.

  • Hand-Eye Coordination: Students will synchronize visual feedback (candy percentage growth and balloon counters) with physical mouse/trackpad movements.

  • Algorithmic Thinking & Goal Tracking: Students will follow a sequential process (click/tap start, continuous spinning, inflated balloon tracking, sweet victory trigger) to achieve task completion.

⏱️ The Activity: Spin the Cotton Candy!

1. The "Sugar Swirl" Warm-up (5 Mins)

  • Teacher Intro: "Class, today we’re heading to the carnival! We have to spin delicious cotton candy onto our stick, but it takes a smooth, circular click-and-drag motion to build up our sweet treat."

  • Physical Practice: Have students practice big circular motions in the air with their index finger ("air-swirling") while holding down their imaginary mouse button. Remind them: "Press down, hold tight, and keep swirling without letting go!"

2. The Carnival Challenge (15 Mins)

  • Phase 1 (The Soft Swirl): Students learn to tap to start the game and hold down the primary click button while dragging in continuous circles around the cotton candy machine.

  • Phase 2 (Building the Layer - Candy Progress %): As students drag, they monitor the Candy Progress bar (0% to 100%). Encourage smooth, rhythmic motion—letting go early stops the progress!

  • Phase 3 (Balloons & Victory!): Advanced students work on filling their candy meter repeatedly to reach the Balloons Inflated: 10 / 10 target to unlock the SWEET VICTORY! 🏆 reward screen.

3. Reflection (5 Mins)

  • Discussion: Ask the students: "Was it easier to keep the cotton candy growing when you made big wide circles or fast tight circles? What happened when your finger lifted off the button while spinning?"

✅ Success Criteria

  • The Sugar Scout: Can click to start the game and perform short click-and-drag motions, but occasionally releases the click button early.

  • The Carnival Crafter: Maintains a continuous click-and-drag swirl, building candy progress consistently up through multiple levels.

  • The Master Confectioner: Smoothly controls cursor rotation, tracks progress metrics up to 100%, and successfully inflates all 10 balloons to hit Sweet Victory.

🎓 Mr. M’s Teacher Pro-Tip:

Trackpad users often struggle with continuous dragging because their finger reaches the edge of the pad. Teach them to use their non-dominant hand index finger to hold down the click button while their dominant hand index finger does the swirling! For mouse users, remind them that keeping their wrist flat on the desk provides the stability needed for smooth circular movements.

📚 Standards Alignment

New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) - Computer Science & Design Thinking (Grades K–2)

  • 8.1.2.CS.1: Select and operate computing devices that perform a variety of tasks accurately and quickly based on user needs and preferences.

    • Application: Master continuous click-and-drag input techniques using a mouse or trackpad to complete visual interactive tasks.

  • 8.1.2.AP.4: Break down a task into a sequence of steps.

    • Application: Segmenting the gameplay into starting the turn, sustaining circular cursor movement, monitoring progress percentages, and achieving victory conditions.

  • 8.1.2.AP.5: Describe a program’s sequence of events, goals, and expected outcomes.

    • Application: Connecting physical continuous drag input to digital feedback metrics (percentage progress bars, balloon counters, sound/visual victory triggers).
