Lesson Plan: Alphabet Toy Shop

Focus: Letter-Sound Matching, Keyboard Navigation, & Drag-and-Drop Sorting

L.A.B.S.: Alphabet Toy Shop

Grade Level: Kindergarten – 1st Grade

🎯 Learning Objectives

  • Letter Location & Identification: Students will locate target letters across the QWERTY keyboard layout to select and organize matching toys.

  • Input Control Precision: Students will execute precise click-and-drag or tap actions to pick up toys from shelves and sort them into customer boxes.

  • Task Decomposition: Students will break down customer order requests into step-by-step actions (identify letter, locate key, drag matching toy).

⏱️ The Activity: Toy Shop Helper

1. The "Shelf Inspection" Warm-up (5 Mins)

  • Teacher Intro: "Welcome to the Alphabet Toy Shop! The toys are mixed up on the shelves, and our shoppers need help finding toys that match their special letters."

  • Keyboard Warm-Up: Have students place two hands on their keyboards or screens. Call out target letters (A, M, S) and have students place a finger on the matching key, reinforcing two-handed navigation.

2. Packing the Toy Orders (15 Mins)

  • Phase 1 (Single Toy Matching): Students read a customer's letter request, locate the letter key or icon, and drag the matching toy off the shelf into the box.

  • Phase 2 (Shelf Sorting): As more customers arrive, students practice scanning the top, middle, and bottom rows to quickly spot and grab requested letters.

  • Phase 3 (Rush Hour Helper): Advanced students tackle timed multi-item orders, practicing smooth transitions from identifying a letter to executing the drag-and-drop movement.

3. Reflection (5 Mins)

  • Discussion: Ask the class: "Which row on the keyboard had the hardest letters to find today? How did using two hands help you pack the toy boxes faster?"

✅ Success Criteria

  • The Toy Apprentice: Can identify letter sounds/names but needs help finding letters on the keyboard or holding the click during drag-and-drop.

  • The Shelf Clerk: Independently locates target letters and completes toy sorting with moderate accuracy and minimal drops.

  • The Master Shopkeeper: Rapidly scans the keyboard, locates letters across all rows, and completes multi-toy orders with fluid drag-and-drop mechanics.

🎓 Mr. M’s Teacher Pro-Tip:

Watch out for "one-finger hunters" who use only their right index finger to search the whole board. Encourage them to keep their left hand on the left side (near A-S-D-F) and right hand on the right side. If toys get dropped halfway across the screen, remind them: "Click, HOLD like glue, move the mouse, then LET GO over the box!"

📚 Standards Alignment

New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) - Computer Science & Design Thinking (Grades K–1)

  • 8.1.2.CS.1: Select and operate computing devices that perform a variety of tasks accurately and quickly based on user needs and preferences.

    • Application: Utilizing mouse/trackpad controls and two-handed keyboard navigation to locate items and interact with on-screen elements.

  • 8.1.2.CS.2: Explain the functions of common software and hardware components of computing systems.

    • Application: Understanding how physical user inputs (key presses and click-and-drag actions) directly move digital objects into designated target areas.

  • 8.1.2.AP.4: Break down a task into a sequence of steps.

    • Application: Following a multi-step sequence: reading the order, locating the letter target, grabbing the toy, and dropping it into the shipping box.
