Lesson Plan: Alphabet Snack Shack

Focus: Letter Recognition, Keyboard Locational Awareness, & Drag-and-Drop Sequencing

L.A.B.S.: Alphabet Snack Shack

Grade Level: Kindergarten โ€“ 1st Grade

๐ŸŽฏ Learning Objectives

  • Letter & Key Recognition: Students will identify target uppercase/lowercase letters and locate their corresponding positions on the QWERTY keyboard or screen interface.

  • Fine Motor Drag-and-Drop: Students will demonstrate controlled click-and-hold or touch mechanics to pick up, move, and serve correct food orders to customers.

  • Order & Sequence Following: Students will break down a customer order into step-by-step actions (matching requested letters to specific snacks in order).

โฑ๏ธ The Activity: Order Up at the Snack Shack!

1. The "Hungry Alphabet" Warm-up (5 Mins)

  • Teacher Intro: "Welcome to the Alphabet Snack Shack! Our hungry customers are coming in with specific cravings, but they only order food that starts with or matches their special letter!"

  • Interactive Prompt: Show a few letters on the board. Practice reading the order out loud: "This customer wants the letter B snack! Who can find the letter B on their keyboard or screen?" Have students hold up their index fingers and practice "hovering" over keys before pressing.

2. Serving the Customers (15 Mins)

  • Phase 1 (Single Letter Orders): Students begin by serving customers who request single letters. Focus is on accurate letter recognition and steady click-and-drag mechanics to move the snack to the customer's tray.

  • Phase 2 (Speedy Snack Rush): As customers arrive faster, students practice navigating across the entire keyboard layout to quickly match and deliver letter orders.

  • Phase 3 (Sequence Master): Advanced students handle multi-item orders, requiring them to fulfill letter sequences in exact order (e.g., matching letter sequences to build complete orders without making mistakes).

3. Reflection (5 Mins)

  • Discussion: Ask the class: "Which letters were the hardest to find on your board? What trick did you use when a customer wanted a letter that was hidden in the middle row?"

โœ… Success Criteria

  • The Snack Helper: Can identify target letters but needs assistance holding down the click to drag items to the customer.

  • The Line Cook: Independently locates target letters and completes drag-and-drop orders with minor timing delays.

  • The Head Chef: Instantly locates letters across the keyboard layout, fulfilling sequential orders quickly with flawless drag-and-drop precision.

๐ŸŽ“ Mr. Mโ€™s Teacher Pro-Tip:

For younger students struggling with drag-and-drop mechanics, remind them of the "Glue Finger" rule: press down hard enough to stick the item to the pointer, drag it across the table, and let go only when it's right over the customer's plate. If students get lost finding letters, remind them to look for benchmark keys like A on the far left or L on the right!

๐Ÿ“š Standards Alignment

New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) - Computer Science & Design Thinking (Grades Kโ€“1)

  • 8.1.2.CS.1: Select and operate computing devices that perform a variety of tasks accurately and quickly based on user needs and preferences.

    • Application: Operating input hardware (mouse/trackpad) to locate keys and execute drag-and-drop motions across the screen.

  • 8.1.2.CS.2: Explain the functions of common software and hardware components of computing systems.

    • Application: Recognizing how key presses and click-and-drag user inputs trigger visual changes on screen (filling customer orders).

  • 8.1.2.AP.4: Break down a task into a sequence of steps.

    • Application: Reading a customer's order, identifying the correct letter, locating it, and dragging the item to complete the order sequence.
