Lesson Plan: Space Typer

(Mission to the Moon)

Focus: Touch Typing, Key Placement & Perseverance

L.A.B.S.: Space Typer

Grade Level: 1st - 5th Grade

🎯 Learning Objectives

  • Postural Placement: Students will identify and utilize "Home Row" anchor keys (F and J) using the Ghost Keyboard's visual bumps.

  • Accuracy over Speed: Students will demonstrate controlled typing to avoid the 5-Mistake Round Reset penalty.

  • Spatial Awareness: Students will translate visual prompts into physical keystrokes without looking down at their hands.

⏱️ The Activity: The Galactic Ascent

1. Pre-Flight Check (5 Mins)

  • The Anchor Keys: Explain that every astronaut needs a "home base." Show the students the Ghost Keyboard at the bottom of the screen. Point out the glowing bumps on F and J.

  • The Mission Briefing: "Today, we are climbing to the Space Station. Each level has 5 rounds. If you make too many mistakes (5), your jetpack malfunctions and sends you back to the start of that round!"

2. The Ascent Phase (15 Mins)

  • Phase 1 (The Training Grounds): Assign a specific color button based on the student's skill level.

    • Beginners: Home Row (Pink button).

    • Intermediate: Top Row (Blue button).

  • Phase 2 (The Color Shift): Challenge students to reach Round 3. Ask them: "What color did your space background turn? If it’s [Color], you’ve officially entered deep space!"

  • Phase 3 (Ghost Mode): For students who reach the Space Station quickly, have them return to the menu and toggle off the Ghost Keyboard. This is "Blind Flight" mode.

3. The Gravity Bonus (5 Mins)

  • Once a student reaches the final Space Station (100 letters), they enter the Star Catcher Bonus Level.

  • Objective: Use Arrow Keys to collect stars while dodging asteroids. If they hit an asteroid, they are "Frozen" in carbonite for 1 second.

✅ Success Criteria

  • The Cadet: Can complete a level but frequently triggers the Round Reset by mashing keys. Struggles to find keys without looking at the physical keyboard.

  • The Pilot: Navigates through all 5 rounds with fewer than 2 resets. Uses the Ghost Keyboard as a guide rather than their hands.

  • The Commander: Completes the level with 95%+ accuracy and successfully navigates the Bonus Level with a high star-count and zero asteroid collisions.

🎓 Mr. M’s Teacher Pro-Tip:

The Round Reset (5 mistakes) is a powerful teaching tool. If you see a student getting frustrated by a reset, have them take their hands off the keyboard, shake them out (the "Space Shake"), and try again at a "Turtle Pace." Remind them that in space, slow is smooth and smooth is fast.
