Lesson Plan: The Lily Pad Leap
Focus: Phonemic Awareness & Consonant Blend Recognition
L.A.B.S.: Phonics Frog
Grade Level: Kindergarten - 2nd Grade
🎯 Learning Objectives
Auditory Discrimination: Students will identify specific consonant blends (initial, final, or 3-letter) within a spoken word provided by the audio engine.
Grapheme-Phoneme Mapping: Students will successfully match a heard sound (e.g., the "str" in string) to its corresponding written letters on a digital lily pad.
Visual-Context Integration: Students will use the provided emoji "picture clues" to confirm word meaning before executing a jump.
⏱️ The Activity: The Great Pond Crossing
1. The "Sound Echo" Warm-up (5 Mins)
Teacher Intro: "Class, today we are helping our Frog get across the pond. But this frog only jumps when he hears the right 'blend' of sounds. Let’s practice our blends together!"
Group Call & Response: Say a blend (e.g., "ST!") and have the kids shout back a word that starts with it ("STOP!"). Repeat with a few from the current lesson's list.
2. The Pond Jump Phase (15 Mins)
Phase 1 (The Training Hop): Start students on Initial L-Blends. These are the "continuous" sounds that are easier to hear. The goal is to get 15 correct to earn the first checkmark.
Phase 2 (Deciphering the Code): Move to Final Blends or 3-Letter Blends. Challenge students to look at the "Redacted" word box (e.g., bl _ _ t) and use the emoji to guess the blend before they even look at the lily pads.
Phase 3 (Rising Swamp Challenge): For students who have cleared 3+ levels, have them toggle on Rising Swamp Mode. This adds a layer of "escape" mechanics, requiring faster decision-making as the water rises.
3. Reflection (5 Mins)
Ask the students: "Which blends were 'tricky' and sounded almost the same? (e.g., br vs bl). How did the picture help you when the robot voice said a word you didn't know?"
✅ Success Criteria
The Tadpole: Can identify common initial blends but requires the emoji hint for almost every jump. May struggle with the "W-Blends" or "Final Blends."
The Leaper: Successfully clears a full lesson (15 words) with at least 80% accuracy and has earned multiple checkmarks on the main menu.
The Swamp-Master: Navigates the "3-Letter Blends" (the hardest tier) and can survive the Rising Swamp for more than 10 consecutive hops without a mistake.
🎓 Mr. M’s Teacher Pro-Tip:
The "W-Blends" (tw, dw) are notoriously difficult for K-1 students to distinguish. If you see a student stuck on the "Dwarf" or "Twin" hops, have them put their hand on their throat to feel the "vibration" of the D vs the T. Also, keep an eye on your Teacher Dashboard—if the whole class is at 40% on "Final N-Blends," that’s your signal to do a quick 2-minute "mini-lesson" on the board before they go back to the game!
📚 Standards Alignment
New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) - Computer Science
8.1.2.CS.1: Select and operate computing devices that perform a variety of tasks accurately and quickly based on user needs and preferences.
Application: Navigating a multiple-choice interface to achieve a specific educational goal.
Common Core State Standards (CCSS) - ELA & Literacy
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.3.A: Know the spelling-sound correspondences for common consonant digraphs.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Application: Identifying and selecting blends like str, spl, and nd to complete words and progress in the game.
Lesson Plan: The Sight Word Sprint
Focus: High-Frequency Word Recognition & Digital Dexterity L.A.B.S.: Bird Word Race Grade Level: Kindergarten - 3rd Grade
🎯 Learning Objectives
Visual Word Recognition: Students will instantly identify and select high-frequency sight words (Dolch/Fry lists) in a moving digital environment.
Cognitive Filtering: Students will practice rapid decision-making by distinguishing target words from distractors.
Digital Dexterity: Students will refine trackpad or mouse coordination to accurately navigate the character and catch the words.
⏱️ The Activity: The 100-Word Dash
1. The "Word Wall" Warm-up (5 Mins)
Teacher Intro: Before opening the laptops, select 5 target sight words for the day. Write them on the board and have the class read them aloud together. Tell the students: "Today, our bird needs to build its nest, but it can only use real sight words. If you catch a word, you have to read it in your head!"
2. The Race (15 Mins)
Phase 1 (Exploration): Students focus on controlling the bird and understanding the movement mechanics.
Phase 2 (Accuracy over Speed): Students are tasked with finding specific high-frequency words and avoiding random clicking.
Phase 3 (The 100-Word Goal): Students build reading stamina by staying on task until they catch 100 sight words.
3. Reflection & Cool Down (5 Mins)
Have students turn to a partner and share one tricky word they caught during the game.
✅ Success Criteria
The Fledgling: Successfully navigated the game and caught 50 sight words.
The Navigator: Reached the 100-word goal while demonstrating controlled trackpad/mouse movements.
The Speed Reader: Reached the 100-word goal and can correctly read aloud 3 of the words they caught to the teacher.
🎓 Mr. M’s Teacher Pro-Tip:
This is the ultimate independent literacy center. Because it is self-paced and ad-free, you can confidently assign this to early finishers or a small group while you run guided reading groups without worrying about students clicking on inappropriate pop-ups.
📚 Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Alignment
Reading: Foundational Skills (Print Concepts & Phonics)
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.3.C: Read common high-frequency words by sight (e.g., the, of, to, you, she, my, is, are, do, does).
Lab Application: Constant visual exposure and interactive selection of K-level sight words.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.3.G & RF.2.3.F: Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.
Lab Application: Game mechanics require instant recognition of words that cannot easily be sounded out, rewarding students for memorized visual recall.
Technology & Motor Skills (NJSLS & General Tech)
Application: Develops essential fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and spatial awareness required for navigating a mouse or trackpad in early elementary digital assessments.
